The Original SR5 Brochure
A piece of British classic car history, built right here in Essex.
In the early 1990s Ted Overton did something different. Using genuine Bentley donor chassis, we hand-built a limited run of just seven open-top sports tourers (Bentley specials) right here in our Essex workshop. Each one finished to the owner's own specification. This is the original brochure, just as it was.

Bentley cars were originally designed for sporting motorists who wanted to travel in style. Know as the silent sports car, the open Bentley touring car has attracted attention for the last 70 years. Now Overtons have applied all traditional skills of fine quality automotive engineering and traditional coach building to produce a unique limited edition of only seven Bentley sr5s, built on the highly successful r type / mkVI chassis and engine, which has been restored to perfection to give a few fortunate sr5 owners a car which is reliable and a pleasure to drive. The hand crafted body will attract attention whether the sporting motorist uses the car for touring or competes in one of many vintage races.
All of the traditional skills of the best of British coach-building and Bentley engineering have been combined in this limited edition, and even the cock pit style is hand furbished and upholstered to suit each owner. The building time and final finishing is subject to negation. Each owner is given a short course of driving intrusion and advice on normal maintenance to obtain optimum performance for each car. All weather hoods and tonneau are available in various colours.
Building the Bentley SR5
For more than 25 years Overton vehicles have restored and repaired many classic Rolls Royce and Bentley motor cars as well as Rolls Royce trained engineers; they retain a team of coach builders and upholsters that have prepared many Rolls Royce and Bentley motor cars for competition and concourse classes. Vehicles restored by Overton vehicles are in many private collections across the world. Overtons offer a unique service in flying highly trained engineers to provide specialist care for classic Bentley and Rolls Royces. In 1992 they won the Annual Bentley Drivers Club Concours d'Elegans with a Bentley Mark 6
at Hatfield House. Over 350 private owners of Rolls Royce and Bentley cars in the UK use Overton Vehicles for servicing all models from Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts to Bentley Turbo Rs.Bentley's smooth running4,566cc straight six engine followed the tradition of the silent sports car and provided all the flexible power for comfortable long distance transport.
The 'R' type steel bodied saloons enabled production to be increased throughout the 1950's to meet demand for Bentley cars, but time naturally had taken its toll on the steel bodywork of many cars of this range.
For each Overton Bentley SR5 an original R Type Bentley has been stripped down to the chassis which has been entirely refurbished and re-positioned by skilled engineers with the engine being completely rebuilt to the highest engineering standards from the sump upwards.
The SR5 has two cooling systems. One for normal motoring automatically controlled by a thermoswitch. The second system is incorporated to supply additional cooling for extreme weather conditions and/or competitive racing. These dual fans enabled Overon's to reduce the height of the original radiator and thus improve the low slung appearance of the front of the car, while providing cooling efficiency for a long engine life and top performance.
Overtons have extensively test driven the SR5 all through the exceptionally hot summer period of 1992, and found it was only necessary to use the extra cooling system on very few occasions.
The external exhaust system is hand-made of stainless steel and passengers are shielded by a light grid when entering the SR5.All of the original Bentley 'R' type instrumentation is rebuilt into a new dashboard with the owner's own choice of veneer. Each 'R' type chassis is fitted with an SR5 handbuilt Overton body constructed from carefully selected ash and covered with aluminium. The interior of the Driver's Cockpit is refurbished individually to suit the future owner, and is upholstered in handcrafted leather. A folding third seat is provided in the tail for the occasional passenger.
